Toroczkay, Katalin: A short overview about the packaging industry on the occasion of trade fair, Interpack 2014 Acrobat-Reader-icon_48x48

On the largest packaging trade fair of the world, Interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf between 8th and 14th of May 2700 exhibitors from 60 countries presented their latest ideas, developments, visions. As the world's leading trade fair, it is the major inspiration for the packaging industry and all related process technologies. The exhibitors presented their products and developments not only in equipment and machinery for packaging and processing, but also in production tools for packaging materials, materials themselves, and services for the entire industry. According to exhibition sectors we give an overview about observable processes in the pharmaceutical and the food industry, in the industrial and beverage packaging and finally a brief mention of the bioplastic forum in the fair.

39% of plastics processing constitute packaging materials, making 307 000 tons from 10 different base materials in 2013. This is by 2% more than the quantity in the previous year.

Films are one of the most important sectors in the plastics industry. The global market for plastic film has recovered after a slowdown in 2009. The global packaging film market is expected to register decent growth during the coming decade. Polyethylene is the mostly used material for packaging film, representing 64% of the total raw materials processed in 2012. Food packaging industry is the major consumer for packaging film.

LDPE/desiccant composites were prepared using zeolite 4A, calcium-oxide (CaO) and their combination (hybrid desiccants). Water uptake of composites was determined at different relative humidity (RH) and results were analyzed to identify the factors influencing the capacity and rate of water sorption. The results showed that water uptake of composites can be modeled by Fickian diffusion. Sorption capacity and rate of the composites depend on the amount of desiccant present in the composite, the applied RH and in the case of the hybrid desiccants on the CaO/zeolite rate. The largest capacity and rate were found in the LDPE/CaO composites, but the chemical reaction between CaO and water during the water uptake results in significant volume change of the composites. Partial substitution of CaO by zeolite can decrease the volume change of the composites, but at the same time it also leads to decreased water sorption capacity and rate. Consequently if we use hybrid desiccant the CaO/zeolite rate must be selected according to the task to be fulfilled.

The author reviews the application fields, the materials and some novelty of packagings in intralogistics.
